Incarnations of Lord Krishna

krishna-incarnationsLord Krishna explains in Bhagavad-gita that He appears millennium after millennium to give protection to His devotees, vanquish the miscreants and reestablish the religious principles. He does this by incarnating in His various transcendental forms like Rama, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, etc.

Sri Brahma-samhita explains that there are innumerable incarnations of Lord Krishna and They are all non different from Him their transcendental nature. But still amongst all those, Lord Krishna Himself is the original, primeval, Supreme Personality of Godhead. In all other incarnations the Supreme Lord displays only those which are necessary for the specific function of that incarnation. But in His original, triple bent, Shyamasundara form of Krishna, He displays all His six opulences, viz., strength, beauty, fame, renunciation, knowledge and wealth.

Srimad Bhagavatam mentions that there as many incarnations of the Supreme Lord, as many waves are there in a river, which means, no one count the number of incarnations. Thus, the scriptures mention only a few significant of those. Amongst those there are ten prominent incarnations known as the “dashavatara”.

The incarnation of the Lord is identified by its mention in the scriptures. The scriptures mention all the incarnations of the Lord along with Their names, Their appearance, yuga in which They appear, activities They perform, etc. Unless there is mention in the Vedic scriptures, the incarnation is not considered to be so. In the recent past, Lord Chaitanya appeared as the golden incarnation.
