The Birth and Glory of Hanuman

On Mount Sumeru lived a powerful Vanara leader, Keshari with his beautiful wife Anjana. Once Vayudev saw her alone in the forest and desired to unite with her. By his mystical yoga she gave birth to a child named Hanuman. Once when Hanuman cried in hunger, Anjana placed him in grass and went to collect fruits.

Hanuman saw the sun and thinking it to be a large fruit, he flew upwards to grab it. Vayu went with him, covering him with a cool breeze so that he would not be burned by the sun. The sun-god also withheld his blazing rays as he understood that Hanuman was a great devotee of Vishnu.

As Hanuman flew towards the sun, Rahu approached to swallow the sun as it was the day of eclipse. But Hanuman pushed him aside. Fearful Rahu went to Indra and informed that another Rahu had come to eat the sun. Indra rushed to Hanuman. Hanuman thought Indra to be another fruit and he turned towards him. Indra struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt, and Hanuman fell unconscious to earth. Seeing this Vayu became angry and interrupted life air of all living entities causing suffocation.

Indra and devatas pleaded to Vayu to release back the life air. Brahma also appeared there and Vayu explained that due to Indra’s thunderbolt, his son has fallen unconscious. Therefore he has withdrawn the life air.

Brahma brought Hanuman back to consciousness and informed the devatas, “This Vanara will accomplish your purpose on earth and become a famous servant of Vishnu. Please shower your blessings on him.”

Indra removed his garland and put it around Hanuman’s neck, saying, “From today my thunderbolt can never harm him.”

The sun-god blessed him with a hundredth part of his brilliance and unsurpassed knowledge of scriptures.

Yamaraja granted him invulnerability to his rod and freedom from ailment. Kuvera blessed him that he would fight untiringly in battle. Lord Shiva granted immunity from his weapons and that he could never be killed by him. Visvakarma added, “This Vanara shall be invulnerable to all celestial weapons created by me and he shall be long-lived.”

Finally, Brahma said, “O wind-god, your son shall be invincible in battle. He will be terror of his foes and the shelter of his friends. He can change his form at will and go wherever he pleases at any speed he likes. No Brahmin’s curse will be able to kill him. In war he will accomplish tremendous feats, thus causing Ravana's destruction and Rama's pleasure.”

After this the gods departed and Vayu took Hanuman back to his mother.
