The auspicious day of Sri Nityananda Prabhu's advent is known as Sri Nityananda Trayodashi. In order to start the Sankirtana Movement, the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appeared in Navadvipa, West Bengal, as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Congregational chanting of the holy name of the Lord, the Yuga-dharma for this age). In the form of Nityananda Prabhu, Lord Balarama assisted the Supreme Lord in carrying out His purpose. He helped Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu by distributing the Lord's holy name in Bengal.
In the year 1474 AD, Nityananda Prabhu appeared as the son of Padmavati and Hadai Pandita in the village of Ekachakra, in the district of Birbhum (West Bengal). He was born in the month of Magha on the thirteenth day of the light fortnight (Magha Shukla Trayodashi). Even today, pilgrims travel to Ekachakra to visit the birthplace of Lord Nityananda. The name of this temple is Garbhavasa. Lord Nityananda's parents were devout Brahmins who were originally from Mithila.
