It is believed that Ekadashi appeared on the day of Utpanna Ekadashi and that is why Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi is considered as the first Ekadashi. All the sins of the person who performs Utpanna Ekadashi are destroyed.
Dharmaraj Yudhishthir started saying that oh God! I heard the detailed description of Kartik Shukla Ekadashi i.e. Prabodhini Ekadashi. Now please tell me about Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Marshish month. What is the name of this Ekadashi and what is the procedure for its fasting? What is its method? What fruit is obtained by observing this fast? Please say all this methodically.
Lord Krishna said: This Ekadashi which falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Marshish is called Utpanna Ekadashi. This fast gives virtue equal to the fruit one gets by taking a bath in Shankhodhar Tirtha and having darshan of God. The fasting devotee should not talk to thieves, hypocrites, adulterers, slanderers, liars and any kind of sinner. I tell you its greatness, listen carefully.
Yudhishthir started saying that oh God! You didn't even say thousands of Yagya and Lakh Gaudan are equal to Ekadashi fast. So tell me how this date became better than all other dates.
God started saying - O Yudhishthir! A demon named Mur was born in Satyuga. He was very strong and terrible. That fierce monster defeated Indra, Aditya, Vasu, Vayu, Agni etc. all the gods and chased them away. Then all the gods including Indra got scared and told the whole story to Lord Shiva and said, O Kailashpati! All the deities are wandering in the land of death in fear of the demon Mur. Then Lord Shiva said - O Gods! Take refuge in Lord Vishnu, the Lord of the three worlds, the destroyer of the sorrows of the devotees.
Only He can remove your sorrows. Hearing such words of Lord Shiva, all the deities reached Kshirsagar. Seeing God sleeping there, they started praising him with folded hands, O Lord who is praiseworthy by the gods! Greetings to you again and again, Madhusudan, the protector of the gods! Greetings to you. you protect us Fearing the demons, we all have come to your shelter.
You are the doer, parent, originator and maintainer and destroyer of this world. He is the giver of peace to all. You are the sky and the underworld. You are everyone's grandfather Brahma, Sun, Moon, Agni, material, home, offering, mantra, tantra, chanting, host, yajna, karma, doer, enjoyer. You are omnipresent. Except you there is nothing variable or immovable in all the three worlds.
O God! The demons have conquered us and corrupted us from heaven and we all the gods are running here and there, you protect us all from those demons.
After hearing such words of Indra, Lord Vishnu started saying that O Indra! Who is such an elusive demon who has conquered all the gods, what is his name, how much power does he have and in whose shelter is he and where is his place? Tell me all this.
Hearing such words of God, Indra said - God! In ancient times, there was a demon named Nadijangha, he had a great and famous son named Mur. He has a city named Chandravati. He has taken out all the deities from heaven and established his authority there. He has taken over the place of Indra, Agni, Varuna, Yama, Vayu, Ish, Moon, Nairut etc.
It illuminates itself by becoming the sun. He himself has become a cloud and is most invincible. O Asura Nikandan! Make the gods invincible by killing that evil.
Hearing this word, God said - O Gods, I will kill him soon. You go to Chandravati Nagri. Saying thus, all the deities including the Lord left for the city of Chandravati. At that time when the demon Mur was thundering in the battlefield along with the army. Hearing his terrible roar, all the deities started running in all four directions out of fear. When God himself came to the battlefield, the demons ran on him with weapons and weapons.
The Lord pierced them with his arrows like a snake. Many demons were killed, only Mur was saved. He continued to fight with the Lord without any hesitation. Whatever sharp arrow God shot, it proved to be a flower for him. His body disintegrated but he continued to fight. There was also a wrestling match between the two.
Their war continued for 10 thousand years but Mur was not defeated. Tired, Lord went to Badrikashram. There was a beautiful cave named Hemvati, in which the Lord entered to rest. This cave was 12 yojanas long and had only one door. Lord Vishnu slept there in the lap of Yoganidra. Mur also came back and seeing the Lord sleeping, was eager to kill, then the goddess of bright, radiant form appeared from the body of the Lord. The goddess challenged the demon Mur, fought and killed him instantly.
When Shri Hari woke up from the lap of Yoganidra, knowing everything, told that goddess that you were born on Ekadashi day, so you will be worshiped in the name of Utpanna Ekadashi. Your devotees will be those who are my devotees.
