After a determined legal struggle spanning 25 years, ISKCON Bangalore has emerged victorious in a landmark judgment delivered by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. This long-awaited verdict affirms that the iconic ISKCON Hare Krishna Hill temple in Bangalore belongs to ISKCON-Bangalore society, not ISKCON-Mumbai.
The court has categorically restrained ISKCON-Mumbai from interfering in the affairs of ISKCON-Bangalore, marking a pivotal moment in the history of ISKCON and restoring the foundational principles laid down by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON.
The Core of the Dispute: Srila Prabhupada’s Authority
At the heart of this legal conflict was a deeper spiritual issue—Who is the spiritual Acharya (initiating guru) of ISKCON?
Before his departure in 1977, Srila Prabhupada instituted a Ritvik initiation system, under which all future devotees would be initiated as his direct disciples. However, after his Maha Samadhi, a group of senior leaders in ISKCON began to claim themselves as successor Acharyas, ignoring Srila Prabhupada’s clear directive.
This self-appointed Acharya system led to severe consequences:
-
Devotees who opposed it were harassed, expelled, and even subjected to violence.
-
One such devotee, Sulochana Dasa, was tragically murdered in 1984.
-
Lavish lifestyles, self-glorification, and deviation from Srila Prabhupada’s ideals became rampant.
ISKCON Bangalore Stands Firm
Led by Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa, ISKCON Bangalore refused to accept this unauthorized guru system. In 1999, this principled stand led to hostility and expulsion attempts from ISKCON-Mumbai, who also tried to take over the temple at Hare Krishna Hill, Bangalore.
However, the land was lawfully allotted in 1988 by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to the ISKCON-Bangalore society, an independently registered entity. With this foundation, a court battle began in 2000 that spanned over two decades, fighting not for power or property—but to uphold Srila Prabhupada’s position as the eternal Diksha Guru of ISKCON.
Supreme Court Upholds the Truth
On May 16, 2025, the Hon’ble Supreme Court:
-
Declared that the ISKCON Hare Krishna Hill temple legally belongs to ISKCON-Bangalore society.
-
Injuncted ISKCON-Mumbai from interfering in ISKCON-Bangalore’s affairs.
-
Effectively protected the rights of thousands of devotees who wish to follow Srila Prabhupada as their sole initiating guru.
This historic verdict paves the way for peaceful spiritual practice for devotees around the world without fear of persecution or expulsion.
A Movement Rejuvenated
Despite the long legal battle, ISKCON Bangalore has seen incredible growth:
-
Established 25 temples across India and 8 temples abroad.
-
More than 1,000 full-time missionaries (monks).
-
A congregation of over 10,000 dedicated devotees.
-
Pioneered The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which now feeds over 2.3 million children every school day in 17 states across India.
This is not just a legal victory—it is a spiritual vindication and a reaffirmation of Srila Prabhupada’s original vision for ISKCON as a unified, guru-centric spiritual movement.
