Roman Transliteration

om vajra-nakhaya vidmahe
tiksna-damstraya dhimahi
tanno nrsimhah pracodayat

Translation : “We meditate upon Lord Narasimha, whose nails are as powerful as thunderbolts and whose teeth are fierce and sharp. May that Supreme Lord Narasimha enlighten and inspire our consciousness.”

Meaning of the Mantra

The Narsimha Gayatri Mantra glorifies the immense power, protection, and mercy of Lord Narsimhadeva. His nails are compared to thunderbolts because with them He effortlessly destroyed the powerful demon Hiranyakashipu to protect His devotee Prahlada Maharaja.

The mantra is not merely a prayer for physical protection, but also for spiritual awakening. By meditating upon Lord Narsimha, devotees seek purification of the heart, freedom from fear, and the strength to remain fixed in devotional service.

Lord Narsimha represents divine protection against both external dangers and internal enemies such as anger, greed, illusion, envy, and fear.

Appearance of Lord Narsimhadeva

The appearance of Lord Narsimhadeva is described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Seventh Canto. To protect His young devotee Prahlada Maharaja, the Lord appeared from a pillar in a wondrous form that was neither man nor animal — half-man and half-lion.

At twilight, Lord Narsimha placed the demon Hiranyakashipu upon His lap and tore him apart with His divine nails, thus fulfilling all the conditions of Brahma’s boon while simultaneously protecting Prahlada Maharaja.

This pastime demonstrates the eternal truth that the Lord always protects His surrendered devotees.
