The Six Goswamis of Vrindavan

Who Were the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan?

In the 16th century, six remarkable saintly personalities—known as the Shad-Goswamis—descended upon Vrindavan with a divine purpose: to excavate the lost holy places of Krishna’s pastimes and establish the true principles of Bhakti Yoga. Personally empowered by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, these six devotees lived lives of intense austerity, scholarship, and devotion.

Their names are now immortal:

            •          Srila Rupa Goswami

            •          Srila Sanatana Goswami

            •          Srila Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami

            •          Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami

            •          Srila Jiva Goswami

            •          Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami

“They were not ordinary saints. They were transcendental generals, laying the foundation for Krishna consciousness to spread across the world centuries later.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Why Are They So Important in Krishna Consciousness?

The Six Goswamis didn’t just write scriptures—they lived them. Renouncing all comforts, they wandered the forests of Vrindavan, surviving on minimal food and rest, all while constantly chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Their contributions include:

            •          Excavating Vrindavan’s Holy Sites: They rediscovered key locations of Krishna’s pastimes such as Radha-Kunda, Shyama-Kunda, Govardhan Hill, and Seva Kunj.

            •          Writing Sacred Texts: They composed over 200 books in Sanskrit and Bengali, laying down the theology of Vaishnavism, including Rupa Goswami’s Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu—the very foundation of our practice today.

            •          Establishing Deity Worship: They installed deities like Radha-Govinda, Radha-Gopinath, and Radha-Madan Mohan, setting standards of Archana (worship) still followed in ISKCON temples globally.

Read more about Why Deity Worship Still Matters in our blog on Archana Seva.

The Heart of Their Teachings: Bhakti Without Agenda

The Six Goswamis taught that real devotion means service to Krishna without personal motive—na dhanam, na janam, na sundarim—no desire for wealth, followers, or fame. Their lives were the embodiment of the verse:

“One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind…”

— Sri Shikshashtakam, Verse 3

This is the same mood Srila Prabhupada carried from Vrindavan to the West.

Their Legacy Lives On—Through Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada, our founder-acharya, was directly in the line of the Six Goswamis through Sri Rupa Goswami, and referred to himself as a “Rupanuga”—a follower of Rupa Goswami.

It is this exact spirit of loyalty and spiritual submission that inspired the Ritvik system in ISKCON Bangalore and other centers globally. Just as the Six Goswamis represented Sri Chaitanya’s teachings with unshakable fidelity, the Ritvik system upholds Srila Prabhupada as the sole initiating guru, ensuring that his pure instructions remain undiluted.

Learn more about this in our blog on the ISKCON court case victory.

Vrindavan Was Their Only Shelter

They never built luxurious temples for themselves. In fact, they often slept under trees, wore torn cloth, and considered even the smallest service to Radha-Krishna as the greatest reward.

            •          They inspired thousands to follow the path of renunciation, not imitation.

            •          They demonstrated that Krishna consciousness is about surrender, not showmanship.

As Srila Prabhupada once said:

“The Six Goswamis showed how to live simply and think deeply.”

The Six Goswamis and Modern-Day Devotion

If you’re reading this on a mobile screen while eating a sandwich (hopefully sattvic), you might wonder: “What does all this have to do with my 9-to-5?”

A lot, actually.

They showed us:

            •          You can serve Krishna with your intellect (like Jiva Goswami).

            •          You can serve with full detachment (like Raghunatha Das Goswami).

            •          You can serve by writing, preaching, and even building temples (like Rupa and Sanatana).

Even today, devotees are applying these teachings in places like ISKCON Ahmedabad through seva, kirtan, cooking Prasadam, and sharing Bhagavad Gita wisdom with the world.

The Power of Remembering the Six Goswamis

By reading their books, visiting Vrindavan, or even honoring them on days like Disappearance Day, we reconnect with the very roots of our movement.

Their prayers—such as Sri Sri Sad-Goswami Ashtaka—are sung even today in temples like Hare Krishna Mandir Ahmedabad, reminding us to cultivate:

            •          Humility

            •          Renunciation

            •          Unshakable faith in Krishna

            •          Total dependence on Guru and Shastra

Final Thought: Walk the Path They Laid

You don’t need to move to Vrindavan and sleep under trees (unless that’s your thing!). But you can live by the essence they taught:

Chant sincerely.

Read their books.

Follow Srila Prabhupada’s instructions.

Offer and honor Krishna prasadam.

Support genuine spiritual movements rooted in fidelity to the Acharya.
